NICKI MCCRACKEN : : GRAPHIC DESIGNER + CREATIVE DIRECTOR + UX/UI DESIGNER
Like most designers, I started my career working with a variety of clients and agencies—some large, some small, some in between. I’ve distilled what I learned from those experiences into a rule that applies to design as both a creative practice and a business:
The simpler, the better.
Getting great design shouldn’t be complicated. I listen to my clients talk about what they want to accomplish. I develop a range of ideas, we talk about them, and I translate the results of those conversations into a finished product that does what it needs to do.
I have relationships with trusted copywriters, developers, photographers, and marketing consultants to augment my skills as needed. If a project calls for these things, I call my peeps. With a network of brilliant, talented, creative professionals, I can partner with the best person or people suited for a particular job. This method benefits my clients both in the quality of work they receive, and what they pay for it.
I am, above all, two things: Curious and Organized. Curiosity fuels my lifelong love of travel, but also an endless desire to learn new stuff. This comes in handy in a line of work that requires getting comfortable with all sorts of ideas at high speed. Organization, while occasionally responsible for spontaneous rearrangement of friends’ Tupperware collections, crops up more frequently in my ability to communicate complex ideas and information through simple, intuitive, and easily understood visual solutions.
Awards? Yes, I have won my share—maybe even a few that you’ve heard of. But my biggest thrill still comes from figuring out new ways to solve problems with smart design.
